The penultimate round of the 2022 British GT Championship visited Brands Hatch. I would be racing on the Grand Prix layout of the circuit which is my favourite in the UK. Paired with the success of the last round, the feeling in camp was great but no testing before the race would level the field for all. A lot of emphasis would need to be placed on the free practice one and two sessions on Saturday morning ahead of the afternoon qualifying.
Bobby is a very talented driver and is always was quickly on the pace, I however struggled in FP1. After more time in the car in FP2 though my laptimes started to come good. In the back of my head I was confident that I would come good in qualifying. And I did, producing my best time of the day by about 1.5 seconds to put me P3 in the GT4 Pro Am class. I was a bit miffed though as the gap to the class leader was bigger than it had been in recent races. So I knew there was further room for improvement. After the qually 2 session we would line up in 12th position of the GT4 runners, P4 in class.
Sunday…… race day. The lovely summer sun shined on the Kent track but the formation lap was a bit messy for me. I was behind a Ginetta near the rear of the field and we only caught the train of cars up as we exited the final corner! It certainly got the heart rate up. I had a great first lap, gaining numerous positions and moving into the class lead halfway round the 2.43 mile track. I held the lead briefly before the positions reversed a lap later. A couple of safety cars broke up my stint, I managed to swerve past the first as it exited to join the track before being waved by the second. I pitted briefly after the third safety car and was just a few seconds behind the class leader. However as a result of our success at Spa we had a pitlane success penalty so Bobby rejoined the track further behind than I entered. He gave it his all during his stint but he was unable to catch Aston Martin driver Darren Turner on this occasion but held second in the Pro Am class due to the lead we had over third after the pitstop.
He crossed the line P2 in class and P5 overall in GT4, once again showing the growing momentum behind Team Brit during our debut season in British GT. It strengthened our P2 position in the pro am championship as we headed into the final round of our debut season
